Social Inequality and Difference (Synoptic Paper)

The examination lasts for one hour and 30 minutes. You have a choice of two questions. Pick just one question from the paper and answer all of the five subsections.

There will be two stimulus items for each question. One will be graphical (a table, chart, graph, pie chart) and one will be a piece of text which may use complex language. Read the stimulus carefully and check the details.

Read the questions carefully. The command words which tell you what to do will be similar for each question and each examination.

(a) Using the information in Item A, identify two ... (6 marks)

(b) Using the information in Item B, identify two ... (6 marks)

(c) Identify and explain two (elements of research design linked to the the stimulus material) ... (12 marks)

(d) Using your wider sociological knowledge, identify (or outline) ... (22 marks)

(e) Outline and assess sociological explanations for ... (44 marks)

Note that question (e) should be treated as an essay and you should spend 45 minutes on it.

The topic areas will all be related to inequality and difference, with emphasis on class, wealth, gender and ethnicity.

You will need to display evidence of knowledge and the ability to understand and apply theory.
