Examination technique for 2533: Culture and Socialisation

These notes are based on those given by Steve Chapman at an 'A' level conference at Llanilltyd Fawr Comprehensive.

Part (a) of the question

This question will ask you to identify and explain two things.
Make sure that you pick out two different things to explain and that it is clear you are writing about two things.
Aim for two paragraphs. Keep your answer short, detailed and to the point.

Part (b) of the question

Follow this basic plan to outline and evaluate an controversial point of view.
Introduction - explain the sociological terms and explain the context of the argument quickly.
— Describe the view in the essay title using studies and evidence which support it.
— Evaluate the view by talking about strengths
— Evaluate the view by talking about weaknesses
— Outline the opposing points of view
— Evaluate the opposing view by mentioning strengths and weaknesses.
— Write a conclusion based on your introduction.

Please take note

Always mention studies and evidence.
Use sociological terms whenever appropriate
Write at least two sides
Comment on what you have written by using signpost terms such as 'however', 'in opposition', 'in contrast' to show that you understand the importance of the debate.
