Mentors and mentees working together
Barry Comprehensive was delighted to welcome a team of ten Maths Mentors from Dow Corning to the school to meet the year 8 pupils they will be working with each week from now until Easter to improve their Key Skills in Mathematics.
The scheme is part of the Dow Corning Community Relations service and is being run in association with Careers Wales who provided training for the volunteer mentors. The scheme, with its focus on numeracy, is unique in South Wales and also addresses health, diet and fitness as part of the school's Personal and Social Education course.
The knowledge and expertise of the mentors, combined with their experience of working in a high-tech industry will prove invaluable in boosting the pupils confidence in working with numbers.
The school is grateful to Dow Corning and Careers Wales for their continued support and especially to the mentors for their time and enthusiasm.
