Basketball County Finals Hat-Trick

Barry Comprehensive School have enjoyed an outstanding result in the Basketball county finals, which were held at Sophia Gardens on March 29 th 2006.

After a double success in the competition last year when the U13 and the U15 teams were crowned county champions, it was a tall order for the school to equal such a feat. However, this year the school had three teams through to the county finals at age groups under 14, 15 and 16.

Barry Comprehensive U14s with coach Matt IngleThe Under 14 team were on court first to face Cathays High School. Barry soon found good rhythm and settled quickly. Fine passing, dribbling and shooting were evident throughout each quarter and Barry Comprehensive School eased to victory with a 57-12 points win. Coach Mr. Ingle said after the game “It was a great team performance and the boys showed great attitude throughout. Lee Baldock demonstrated great skill and was inspirational in helping to secure such an emphatic win.”

Barry Comprehensive U15s with coach Mark HuttonThe Under 15 team were second to play on the centre stage. With only a five man squad the team had a difficult task of emulating the under 14 side. The first remained very tight and at the half time stage Llantwit Major were 12-6 up. The second half however was a different story with Barry displaying great determination and eventually running out 27-19 winners. Mr. Hutton was ecstatic with the performance, “To come to the finals with only 5 players and show that kind of attitude when down at half time was fantastic. It was a proper team performance and Tayvian Ludvigsen was outstanding”.

Barry Comprehensive U16s with coach Leighton ColesThe Under 16 team were also to face Cathays High School in the last game of the day. After winning the Welsh National Championship the previous year hopes were high. Barry Comprehensive School demonstrated some outstanding set plays throughout and the victory was never in doubt. Barry eventually ran out 62-18 winners. Coach Leighton Coles who has worked a great deal with the boys and deserves special credit due to his excellent knowledge of the game and coaching ability commented afterwards. “Again it was a great team performance. Jacob Gray played exceptionally well.”

It has been an amazing feat to improve on the achievements of last year and is due to the efforts of pupils and staff. To win a hat-trick of county championships is outstanding.
