Maths mentors & mentees

The second year of Barry Comprehensive School’s Maths Mentoring Project concluded just before the Easter break with a presentation in the school Library.

During the project. 11 mentors from Dow Corning teamed with 20 pupils from Year 8 to complete a portfolio of work in connection with the ‘Healthy Eating’ focus of their PSE lessons. Since the project began in January, mentors have worked with students in PSE lessons and one-to-one in the library, allowing pupils to discuss any issues they have with the work in an informal setting.

In order to support the schools aim to deliver all three Key Skills at Key Stage 3, the PSE portfolios are also designed to meet the criteria for the Key Skills Level 1 in Application of Number.

Vicky Edwards talking to the boys at the Dow Corning PlantThe Year 8 pupils were also invited to Dow Corning where Vicky Edwards gave a fascinating presentation about the products manufactured at the plant and the amazing range of household products in which they appear. After a good lunch the boys were taken on a tour of the facility to see for themselves exactly what happens behind those gates at the edge of their town.
