As one of the few single-sex schools remaining in Wales, Barry Comprehensive School is in a unique position. Our boys spend the majority of their waking hours with other boys, and comparatively little with the female of the species. So what would life be like in a mixed-sex school? That’s exactly the question our BCTV team asked when they teamed up with the BHTV crew from Bryn Hafren for a co-production about pupils’ experiences of being educated the single-sex way. The six-minute film, to be broadcast on the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s website later this year, highlights the differences in experience of being educated single-sex. As production went underway this week, six Year 9 girls from Bryn Hafren spent the day here as human guinea pigs, getting a rare glimpse of how school life would be with the boys. And six boys took the trip to Bryn Hafren to see life on the other side of the fence. Filming took place all day, and the girls took part in a Maths lesson, a Music lesson and played cricket in PE, all in front of the cameras! All six were extremely positive about our school, and thoroughly enjoyed their day, despite having anticipated the experience with more than a little anxiety! Naomi Jones even went so far as to rate her experience as “99.9 out of 10”! The boys welcomed the girls into their lessons and behaved like “proper gentlemen” according to Carys Toozer of her classmates for the day. The post-production process will be ongoing over the next few weeks, and the completed film will be entered for the Media4Schools Awards next academic year.Photos by Robbie Thompson
