Beach Cleanup

Barry Comprehensive pupils continued the school’s focus on environmental issues by performing a ‘beach-clean’ at the Knap.

On the 6 th of December a group of Year 9 boys went to the Knap as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Service Award. The13 boys managed to collect 15 bags full of environmentally unfriendly rubbish in just one hour, despite the rain and strong winds..

There was all kinds of refuse on pebble beach ranging from metal cans, bottles, plastic, wheels of toy cars and even a miniature refrigerator. In addition the boys collected lots of harmful things such as fishing line, torn cans and even syringes (luckily without needles!). These things could seriously harm and possibly kill the local wildlife not to mention the danger posed to the general public.

When asked, 13 year olds Thomas Mason and Jonathan Berry said “It feels good to give something back to the environment and we couldn’t believe that people would make such a mess of our beach!”
