Conservation, Design & Technology

Barry Comprehensive School’s year 10 Design & Technology students have been hard at work recently on a special project in association with RWE nPower at Aberthaw Power Station

As part of RWE nPower’s conservation programme, an area of woodland at the site is being improved to further encourage wildlife into the area. The focus this year is on attracting native birds, especially tree sparrows and also the insect population needed to provide a food source. The project required suitable nest-boxes and insect towers to be constructed and installed and Barry Comprehensive pupils and staff were quick to offer their assistance.

Under the supervision of Mr Dimmick boys constructed a range of nest boxes and insect towers and then welcomed Mark Picton, Head of Regulation, and Mrs Bush from nPower to the school to inspect their work. Mr Picton presented the school with a cheque and extended an invitation to the boys to visit the power station to assist in the conservation effort with the installation of their work.

Last Thursday twelve pupils spent the day working at the Aberthaw site where they met the Chief Executive of RWE, who flew in from Germany to inspect the project. The boys also enjoyed a lunch courtesy of nPower. The boys represented the school flawlessly with their hard work and excellent behaviour and have made a great start to their GCSE Design & Technology course.
