Throughout spring and summer 2006, pupils from Barry Comprehensive have been involved in the work of the Cwm Talwg Woodlands Resident Group to maintain and protect the wood, create better community access and learn about their local environmental heritage. Volunteers from year 7, organised by the year council, came to help at the project following a talk by Dr Anne Bryan at the school. The boys went down on a weekly basis to help with litter removal, weeding, pruning and path maintenance. Whilst they were there, Dr Bryan was able to use her extensive knowledge of the woods to point out interesting flora and fauna and tell the boys a fascinating snippet about the history of the woodlands.

This relationship is of great value to the school and we were delighted to be invited to attend the Keep Wales Tidy Awards as part of the Cwm Talwg party. The group won in the prestigious Long Term Effort category. Dr Anne Bryan, Mr Tony Lewis and Caelum Davies (representing the school) were awarded a cheque for the Woodlands Group, a commemorative plaque and given a stunning trophy carved out of timber from an ancient yew tree struck by lightning. We have worked with the group for many years and, given the youthful enthusiasm shown by our latest volunteers, we will surely be involved in the continued successful management for years to come.
