Eco-Week

Barry Comprehensive School’s Eco-committee used the first week of July to raise the profile for environmental issues. Members of the Eco-committee have spent several weeks planning ‘Eco-week’ and came up with a range of sponsored activities. These included a day spent at the Amelia Trust Farm, where pupils worked to make the children’s adventure playground safer by adding word bark. Pupils also cut back brambles from paths and swept the site for litter. All pupils worked hard but enjoyed the experience immensely – a huge thank you to the farm for allowing us to visit.

Another highlight of the week was a visit from the Vale’s Biodiversity team. Pupils are keen to develop an area of biodiversity around the school and have set their eye on the area at the front of the school. Plans have already been drawn up…. Click on the Eco Committee website to see the initial plans. Another thank you to Claire and Richard for the time they gave up to work with us.

Sports day was the Eco-Committee’s litter pickers out and proud. We were pleased to leave a very clean Jenner Park.

The week drew to a close with our very own ‘Green Day’. All pupils donated a £1 to raise awareness and wear something green - other than a school jumper! – to help raise awareness. This alone has raised almost £400 and sponsor money is now also coming in. The Eco committee would like to use this money to support several environmental charities, including ‘Friends of then Earth’ and the ‘Centre for Alternative Technology’.

The Eco-Committee’s last event is still on-going: a competition, designed by James Cosgrove in year 9, to design a suitable logo for the Eco Committee. Get those entries in and watch this space!
