Barry Comprehensive School’s Year 7 and year 8 pupils enjoyed individual Eisteddfods this year, with many pupils taking part in solo competitions as well as competing for their houses.
Both Eisteddfods were started with the house singing competitions, a medley of both traditional and popular songs arranged by Mr. Weston, which set the tone for the standard of competition and the event.
Mr. James, Head of Welsh, said, ‘I thought this years Eisteddfod was very successful, with both Year 7 and 8 responding very well to the stage competitions and contributing to an excellent atmosphere throughout the Eisteddfod’.
Next year’s plans are to move the event to the Sports Hall and involve Years 7, 8 and 9 for a lower school Eisteddfod which will involve more pupils.
The week before the Eisteddfod Jamie Robinson was asked to come in and answer questions prepared by Year 10 Welsh Baccalaureate students for their Wales, Europe and the World course. Jamie played his part in answering the questions bilingually and went on to explain that although he came from an English background he had managed to pick up the Welsh language by being positive. He said that several players in the Welsh team and Welsh speakers and that this had contributed to a good atmosphere in Training Camp. Jamie also gave the boys some tips on how to pick up on the language by trying to recognise certain works to give the meaning or understanding of what is being said and, above all, to persevere and remain positive as he did whilst learning Welsh.
