Healthy Living Week

The end of January was a particularly health conscious time for pupils at Barry Comprehensive with the whole school focused on nutrition, exercise and environmentally friendly choices for the week.

The focus was covered in a range of lessons. For example, pupils in Drama improvised scenes around the title: 'Does my bum look big in this?' Ms Walters, Head of Creative Arts, said that she wanted to work on this subject to raise the issue of male anorexia, and poor body image, with the pupils.

Sharon Hutcheon, canteen supervisor, met prior to the week with a range of pupils from the school's eco-committee. The pupils recognised that the school menus always offered healthy choices, but wanted to ensure that pupils were 'bombarded' with health during the week. The results included veggie burgers, a range of bagels, yogurt and fruit combos, homemade soups, delicious fresh fruit smoothies and a range of healthy lunches. The school would like to say a huge thank you to Waitrosse, Tescos and The Fruit & Veg Rack in Barry, and to Marks & Spencer at Culverhouse Cross; each organisation generously donated fruit for the week.

The school tuck shop also joined in with flavoured waters and Fair Trade chocolate.

On the whole, pupils were positive about the week, enjoying many of the new menu choices. Some of the changes are now permanent and the kitchen staff are keen to keep developing healthy choices.

The Sixth Form were also involved in the week, especially on Friday, where they took part in an RS/PSE day entitled 'Healthy Body, Healthy Mind'. Highlights of the day included meditation with Buddhist monks and health workshops. The girls found the 'jelly bellies' fascinating, but were clear that the aim of the sessions was to keep safe.

Another huge thank you to Gill Joyce, from the Vale's midwifery team, and to Simon Morgan-Jones and Mark Newbold from the Tenovus cancer charity. Both groups invested a huge time commitment and pupils have been very warm in their evaluations.
