Destination Iceland

A group of 18 sixth form Geologists and Geographers from Barry Comprehensive and Cowbridge Comprehensive Schools travelled to Iceland for a six-day visit during the Easter break. The group were accompanied by Mr. Prickett and Miss Allen and visited a number of spectacular sites.

On arrival we visited the Perlan viewing platform overlooking Reykjavik and looked around the city in the evening. The following day was spent visiting the divergent plate boundary at Pingvellir, the huge waterfall at Gulfoss and everyone enjoyed being soaked by the erupting geothermal geysers at Geysir.

On day three we visited very high waterfalls at Skogarfoss and Sjellandfoss, walked on the glacier at Solheimjokull, before ending the day on the black sand and spectacular coast at Dyrolhaey. The following day we visited ancient caves on the coast, had lunch perched on the basalt columns at Dverghammar and ended up at the spectacular ice lagoon at Jokulsarlol.

Day five began with a light aircraft flight over to the volcanic island of Heimaey, where we climbed Eldfell volcano and descended into the still steaming crater. We toured the island seeing how they cope with the difficult conditions and volcanic threat.

On the final day we visited the bubbling mudpools at Krysuvik and then enjoyed a relaxing swim in the geothermal pool at the Blue Lagoon before flying home.

The conduct of the pupils was immaculate throughout the trip and they represented both themselves and their schools with distinction.

Mr. Prickett would like to pass on his thanks to all the staff, pupils and parents at both schools for helping make the trip such an overwhelming success. So much so, that we are looking to run it again in two years time.
