Barry Comprehensive School has a distinctly international flavour this week, and not just because of the celebration of European Language Day. The school is fortunate to be able to welcome six international students to the Sixth Form this year. The students provided the following introductions for this article: “I am Stine Bang and I’m from Bergen on the west coast of Norway. I am studying Physics, Mathematics, Photography and Media Studies. I am not sure what I want to become, but I am really looking forward to spending a whole school year in Wales.” “I am Fernando Arellano and I am from Venezuela I live in Puerto Ordaz, Bolivar State in the south of the country near to the great Angel Falls. My city is very beautiful with lots of parks and is very hot – we love the sunshine! I hope to study Metallurgy when I return to Venezuela.” “I am Charlotte O’Hara from Berlin, in the north-east of Germany. I am studying Biology, Mathematics, Geography and Spanish. I am not sure which career I would like when I leave education but I would like to work with children.” “I am Yuta Matsuda and I’m from Tokio the capital and largest city in Japan. After spending a year in Wales I hope to return to Japan to study at University. I would really like to become a Japanese Ambassador.” “I am Eirik Hagerup from the western part of Norway, near Bergen. I am studying Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Film Studies. After I finish school, I hope to study medicine and become a doctor.” “I am Sunniva Thomassen and I’m from Stavanger in the south-west of Norway. I’m studying English Language and Literature, History, German and Spanish. My future plans are uncertain, but I do know that spending this year abroad will be a huge investment in my future education.” As well as providing our visiting students with the experience of a year in Wales, pupils at the school benefit greatly from interacting with their peers from around the globe. Language Day saw the students taking part in lessons with a number of different year groups giving pupils the chance to meet and talk to native speakers. In addition to the presence of the international students, Language Day was marked with activities including, music, art and cooking that celebrated the European languages of Dutch, Norwegian, Italian, Spanish, French and German.
