Bristol University Languages Study Visit

Language enthusiasts Tyler and Sophie Barry Comprehensive School’s Year 12 A Level French students Tyler Hughes and Sophie Harries visited the modern languages summer school course at Bristol University. This is what they had to say about their experience.

"I loved the Summer School at Bristol University. It was a great chance to experience other foreign languages and to learn with different tutors and different styles.

All the tutors were very enthusiastic about their subjects. Most of them were native speakers. The Italian tutor especially was very passionate about pronunciation.

Dr. Lorraine Leu was very helpful too. She opened my eyes to the value of a language degree and where I could take it as a career. I advise everybody to take the chance to gain experience of a language and to try and learn one as well. "
Sophie Harries

"For me, the Bristol University experience was one that I will never forget. The general theme of the trip was for us to gain an insight into university life - in both living there and studying a language. Not only did I study French at the University, but also I was awarded the opportunity to explore the world of languages. I was able to try out Italian, Czech, Portuguese and Russian. As a result of my experience, I am now aware that the demand for a language by employers is forever increasing. Also, I realise that a language is NOT just another form of communication. A language equals power! I certainly feel that I have benefited from my experience, and would encourage every single person to undertake a language, or continue to study the one they are already doing."
