Some of the lucky Barry Comprehensive group with Brian May A group of Music and Performing Arts pupils from Barry Comprehensive School had an unexpected and exciting bonus to their recent assault on London West End when they not only saw the stars, but were fortunate enough to meet and have their photographs taken with the legendary Queen guitarist, Brian May. The school trip, on the 14 th November, saw 30 pupils from Barry Comprehensive School entranced by the magic of ‘Phantom of the Opera’ in Her Majesty’s Theatre in the afternoon followed by a stunning performance of ‘We Will Rock You’ in the Dominion Theatre in the evening. This was a very special performance with the original Queen guitarist Brian May in the theatre and had the whole audience on their feet singing and clapping along. During the interval of ‘We Will Rock You’ Mr Weston, with tongue in cheek, approached Brian May’s minders to see if there was any chance of a word with the super star. All the pupils and staff from Barry Comprehensive were amazed when Brian May not only agreed to meet them after the show by the stage door, but also signed programmes and took the time and trouble to have photographs taken with them. Despite his super star status, Brian was very friendly and genuinely interested in the music trip from South Wales. He was especially supportive of the efforts the music and drama teachers were making to stimulate interests in their pupils by showing them the magic of live performances. Since the trip, Brain May has kept in touch with the school and who knows, maybe he can be persuaded to visit Barry Comprehensive school some time in the future! What is certain, is that the school music trip turned into a magical experience that will live on in the minds of both pupils and teachers alike for many years to come.
