Rhys and Karl (centre) with two of their crewmates aboard the Stavros S Niarchos Rhys O’Sullivan and Karl Steel set off from Gatwick Airport at the start of half term. Rhys and Karl are Year 12 students at Barry Comprehensive School. They flew out to Gran Canaria to join the Tall Ship Stavros S Niarchos after being nominated by staff to celebrate their hard work and achievements in gaining success in their G.C.S.E. examinations. They were met by the youth Leaders at the airport and settled in to their berth on ship prior to two days of intense training prior to leaving port. On the second night they set sail, sailing around Tenerife and La Palma. Once ashore in Tenerife they faced a 10-mile walk to the mouth of the volcano – an experience they enjoyed even though at the time it was a gruelling challenge. Once out to sea they were able to anchor in beautiful weather off Tenerife and enjoy a barbecue and X Factor Talent Show. Rhys was on watch when the ship returned to Gran Canaria and managed to steer the boat 30 ° off-course as they entered port but all the crew managed to get the shore leave they were looking forward to. Before leaving for the trip, both Rhys and Karl were conscious of how they would cope with the demands of being at sea, but the teamwork and friendships with their crewmates saw them through every time. Rhys said “I climbed right to the top of the rigging and I was able to watch sea turtles, dolphins and glowing fish right alongside the ship. It was a tremendous experience”. Karl was equally enthusiastic and said “I’m really looking forward to the crew reunion in September when everyone meets up again in Portsmouth”. They were excellent ambassadors for the school and can feel proud of all they achieved during their memorable week.
