On Wednesday 14th February a group of year 8 volunteers from Barry Comprehensive School gave up an hour of their time planting trees in the Cwm Talwg Wood. The boys were accompanied by their pastoral coordinator Mrs Clarke and Dr Bryan of the Cwm Talwg Woodlands Resident Group.
The tree planting exercise was a continuation of work carried out by pupils last year that was organised by Caelum Davies of the Year 8 School Council. In 2006 the pupils work contributed to the Cwm Talwg Residents group winning the prestigious Long Term Effort Award from Keep Wales Tidy.
Dr Bryan met the group at the site and explained how to plant the saplings without damaging their roots before the pupils took up their spades and planted saplings to help in the creation of a new hedge. The pupils feel that lt is important to continue this work in order to maintain and protect the wood, improve community access and to learn about their local environmental heritage. |
