The new 5x60 initiative has arrived at Barry Comprehensive School! So what is 5x60? Well its part of the Welsh Assembly's target of getting 90% of secondary pupils achieving 60 minutes of physical activity five times a week by 2020. To help achieve this target the school has in post their very own 5x60 officer; Ben Williams. Ben's role is to consult with the pupils, listen to their needs and the barriers which prevent them from participating in activity, and subsequently form a timetable of activities that suit the pupils' needs. The autumn term 5x60 activity timetable at Barry Comprehensive has included Dodgeball, Breakdancing, Trampolining, Basketball, Table Tennis, and Football. The school has experienced a very promising start with hundreds of pupils participating in a 5x60 activity. After this initial success, many of the activities will be carrying on into the spring term, with the programme expanding to include golf and cycling. Additionally, the first 5x60 trip took place in early December, with eight year 10 pupils and one year 9 pupil undertaking the challenges of mountain biking and abseiling at Ynys Hwyel outdoor pursuits centre. The trip was highly successful, and future trips to the centre are greatly anticipated. So if you haven't tried 5x60 yet then come and give it a go in the New Year. Remember, you don't have to be the world's greatest athlete, it's about staying active and having fun!!!
