ECO Update

Barry Comprehensive school pupils took on the mammoth task of getting their school and community to recycle Christmas cards for the second year running.

Eco Committee members with 38,500 Christmas Cards ready for re-cyclingThe Eco-Committee again decided to support the Vale of Glamorgan initiative to reduce waste at Christmas. Old Christmas cards are a particular problem because the glitter and ribbons used to decorate them mean they cannot be recycled with general waste paper and card.

The Eco-Committee publicised the campaign within the school and the local community and would like to say a huge thank-you to the many, many pupils and parents who took the time and trouble to bring in huge numbers of cards.

The grand total for cards this year was 38, 500 cards with Connor Rowlands of 8DGP collecting 5,300 cards alone.

Eco Committee members at the Healthy School’s celebration in Barry’s Memorial HallBarry Comprehensive School also took the opportunity to present their work at the recent Vale’s high-profile Healthy School’s celebration in Barry’s Memorial Hall. Alex Parker (year 7), Thomas Case (year 8) and James Cosgrove (year 10) contributed to the Healthy School’s initiative through a PowerPoint presentation celebrating our Eco-Committee’s achievements. Activities covered included Eco Week, GREEN day and the Eco Committee’s residential trip to CAT (Centre for Alternative Technology) in North Wales. Pupil’s performances are always a highlight of the Healthy School’s Awards and the pupils did us proud! The pupils also brought back our end of Phase 5 Healthy School’s Award.

Sixth form pupils have also had food for thought in recent Citizenship lessons. This term the focus is on food, our choices and their global impact. Marie Johnson, from Healthy Schools, gave a very thought provoking session to Citizenship pupils entitled ‘Values for Money’, where she tried to shift the focus from value for money to more environmental issues such as organic farming, fair trade and food miles. A big thank you to Ms. Johnson for giving up her time.
