Barry Comprehensive’s School Council held its second whole school election this week with an impressive turnout. The process is designed to mirror the general election but unlike the general election, over 80% of the 1200 pupils voted and many classes reported a 100% turnout. Pupils enjoyed voting and took the process very seriously.
Each form group voted for one pupil to represent them at the Year Council. Each Year Council then selects two members to represent their views at the School Council.
Jeff Wyatt from the Vale of Glamorgan Council announced the results of the elections to an anxious audience in the school hall. Jeff said “school council elections can only be good for encouraging more young people to get involved in local politics”. Ve VanDeVoorde, the Youth Participation Officer for the Vale of Glamorgan oversaw the counting of the official ballot papers, while Year 10 pupil, James Cosgrove yet again proved to be a great asset to the School Council by ensuring all classes had an opportunity to vote.
The School Council can look forward to a busy year and hope to build on the progress made last year, especially in terms of recycling, charity fund raising and community participation. Next month, the Vale Council Chambers will be the venue for the School Council’s inaugural meeting, then midway through October the School Council will visit the Welsh Assembly Senedd and take part in Local Democracy Week. After a very busy October, the School Council will tackle the real business of making their voices heard and improving the school experience for all pupils
