Barry Comprehensive School Year 12 students were asked at the start of their Citizenship course what they would like to see covered; the answer was clear: lots of ‘’stuff on driving’. We have tried hard to provide lots of opportunities in this area: the school took up places on the RAF St. Athen Road Safety day – which involved sessions with trained driving instructors – and during Road Safety week Mr. John Smith (MP) came in to speak to several of the pupils. Following these events last week the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service visited the school with their ‘Domino effect’ project. A team of firemen demonstrated the dangers of driving through a presentation, group questioning and the examination of crash vehicles and fire rescue equipment. Dave Ansell, who ran the team, was clear in his message: ‘Driving is great and offers young people real freedom. But 17-24 years old are a high risk category and young people need to understand why this is the case. We are not here to tell people what not to do, but we are here to raise awareness and to help young people understand the risks.’ Pupils have been very positive in their feedback, finding the sessions both interesting and informative. A big thank you to Dave and his community team for all their work.
