Barry Comprehensive School recently welcomed the opportunity to host a FAW Trust initiative called ‘Show Racism the Red Card’. The session was organised by Sunil Patel (SRTRC Coordinator) and ex West Ham United, Charlton Athletic, Fulham and QPR star Leroy Rosenior and was split into a classroom based session and a football training session. The Year 7 football squad, who have had a very successful season, were the lucky ones to be chosen to represent the school and have the chance to take part in this novel learning experience. The initial part of the day saw the boys discuss their views and ideas about racism, both in a social and sports context, and they took the opportunity to quiz Leroy about his experiences of racism throughout his career. In addition the squad watched a DVD in which Premiership stars Rio Ferdinand and Joe Cole were joined by other celebrities to promote the belief that racism has no place in society, never mind just football. After being part of such a fantastic discussion indoors, the boys were then treated to a training session by Leroy himself who put the boys through their paces before finishing with a 5-a-side tournament. The afternoon ended with prizes presented by Leroy to Billy Gratton and Travell Konton, for their contribution throughout the workshop. Sunil said ‘Leroy and I really enjoyed the session, the pupils were great and helped towards it being a positive session’ while Mr Hutton commented ‘this was a fantastic opportunity for the boys to learn about a very important issue through football and they really responded to it.’ MH If you would like more information about this scheme visit the website http://www.srtrc.org/
