After a hectic Autumn term ncluding elections, a visit to the Welsh Assembly, visits from a number of political figures including Jane Hutt AM and a very successful and busy Children in Need. The Barry Comprehensive School Council members are planning an even busier 2008!

In February the Council launched BSC News, the schools first school council magazine, providing an opportunity to spread the word about school news as well as a platform for the school's budding journalists and photographers to show off their talents. The English GCSE Accelerated set are taking the lead on the regular ‘Barry's Guide to . . .' feature as well as the heading up the sports news team.

Lloyd Pursall (Year 11 Council Member) organised a photo shoot, aiming to capture the spirit of the school council and BCS News Team. The photos will be used to spread the word about the school council within the school.

The Eco Committee were kept busy with the Big Christmas Recycle and are keen for the school to become a greener place by recycling more paper, cardboard and plastic than ever before! The Christmas card recycling competition was a huge success, with over 10,000 cards being collected. A year 8 pupil walked away the 1 st Prize of a mobile phone after collecting a staggering 5,300 cards!

In December the School Council and Eco Committee welcomed Clare Havera from Fair Trade Wales to talk about Fair Trade issues. After the session, the school's first Fair Trade group was been set up with the first event being a Fair Trade tasting stand at the Year 9 Options Evening on February 28th at BCS, where pupils and parents sampled Fair Trade products.

The School Council are committed to fundraising for the school and charities including Help Lanka. We now have a new partner school in Sri Lanka in the south of country, 12 miles from near a place called Galle . The school is called Mayadew Maha Vidyalaya (Maha Vidyalaya means Big School ) they are in urgent need of books, computers, a photocopier machine, sports equipment and learning resources.  Mayadew Maha Vidyalaya school has NEVER been helped by anyone before so we hope to make a big difference through fund raising and contact with the school.
