Barry Comprehensive School’s Hospitality and Catering Suite was the venue for the Rotary Club Young Chef Competition last week.

The competition, which is open to young people below the age of 16, is designed to encourage contestants to consider a career in the culinary arts. Contestants were required to prepare and serve a three-course meal for two people in an overall time of 2 hours and 30 minutes within a budget of £14.00.

The four Barry Comprehensive contestants, David Bryan, Daniel Ford, Joseph Mees and James Sullivan are all studying GCSE Catering. The boys were pleased to welcome fellow contestants Bethan and Adam from St Richard Gwyn and Beverley from Bryn Hafren.

Once the meals had been served, and the contestants were busy with the washing up, the judges made their assessment. The judges praised all the contestants for the high quality of their work, and by a narrow margin awarded first place to Joseph Mees. Joseph received an impressive shield and a place in the next round to be held in February. The runner-up position, only two points behind the winner, was awarded to James Sullivan.

Mrs Lancaster, Head of Hospitality & Catering, thanked and congratulated graduate trainee teacher Denise Robinson for her tremendous work and commended the contestants for their wonderful creations and on the impeccable way in which they represented their schools. The school would also like to thank the Barry Rotary Club and the judges for providing the pupils with the opportunity to take part in the Young Chef Competition.

Following on from his close fought win in round one, Joseph once again faced stiff competion, this time from an all-girl group of pupils from Whitchurch High, St Cyres and Bryn Hafren. Judges praised all contestants for the very high quality of the meals they produced before announcing Joseph, with his impressive healthy menu, as the winner.

The next round, at Neath College on the 27 February, will see Joseph facing competition from schools all over South Wales and we have no doubt he will produce nother flawless feast for the lucky judges to sample.
