Five Barry Comprehensive School students travelled to Birchgrove Comprehensive, Swansea to take part in the UK Chess Challenge Megafinal. The pupils achieved a place in the megafinal by competing against fellow students during lunchtimes in the school’s chess club. The club is run as part of a Welsh Baccalaureate community work module. The club meets every Tuesday and is open to everyone from novices to experienced players.
Jamie Callis and Raven Shorney competed in the under 12’s category, Shae Farmer in the under 14 and in the under 15’s Tayler Williams and Sam Jukes represented the school. All the pupils played well against some tough opposition. Sam Jukes played exceptionally well, winning four out of six matches. He has achieved a place in the next round of the competition – the Gigafinal in Manchester.
