The Ffresh Student Film Festival is well-known by higher education institutions across Wales as being the place to showcase their up and coming talent in film making. Now in its seventh year, the festival opened its doors for the first time to sixth form and college students throughout Wales, and Barry Comprehensive students were of course there to show off their cinematic expertise.
Josh Dymond and Gerran Howell both had their films screened at the festival, and as the first sixth form students to enter the festival, their story was covered by ITV Wales on the arts and culture show, The Wales Show. The festival day itself was interesting and educational – with many of the universities that offer moving image courses exhibiting both their students’ work, and introducing their courses to prospective students. The highlight, perhaps, was an interview and conversation with Stephen Garrett, the founder of the production company KUDOS, which has brought to our screens such popular and acclaimed shows as Spooks, Hustle and Life on Mars. Hearing such a respected, innovative and talented figure talking about the television industry and his experience of making award winning programmes was illuminating. So onwards to next year’s festival, where we hope to enter a new Barry Comprehensive show reel and encourage more young film making talent!
