GCSE Results 2009

Following on from last week’s excellent A Levels, GCSE students have produced the best ever results at Barry Comprehensive School.

This year, 79% of pupils achieved five or more A*- C grade GCSE or equivalent qualifications, which is a massive 11% improvement over last year.

Over 40% of pupils achieved ten or more A* - C grades.

The percentage of pupils achieving a grade C or above in all three core GCSE subjects of Mathematics, English and Science is also the highest ever, having increased by 7% over last year.

Concern has again been expressed in the media about girls outperforming boys at GCSE. However, as a single-sex boys school, Barry Comprehensive’s results suggest that this gap can be closed and even reversed.

Many boys produced individual results of note, including;

  • Tim Woodward achieved 11 A* - C grades including 7 A* and 4 A grades
  • James Cosgrove achieved 11 A* - C grades including 3 A* and 8 A grades
  • Ben Jones achieved 11 A* - C grades including 2 A* and 9 A grades
  • Rhys Davies achieved 13 A* - C grades including 3 A* and 3 A grades
  • Lloyd James achieved 13 A* - C grades including 6 A grades
  • Rhys Johnston achieved 11 A* - C grades including 1 A* and 7 A grades
  • Joseph Mees achieved 15 A* - C grades including 2 A* and 5 A grades
  • Rhoddri Phillips achieved 12 A* - C grades including 2 A* and 5A grades
  • Mark Porter achieved 11 A* - C grades including 6 A* and 3 A grades
  • Curtis Fowler achieved 12 A* - C grades including 2 A* and 6 A grades
  • Rhys Roberts achieved 11 A* - C grades including 7 A grades

Having been amongst the first schools to pilot the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification, the new style Diploma continues to go from strength to strength at the school.

Congratulations are also due to a group of thirteen Year 9 boys who all achieved a grade C or above in GCSE Expressive Arts. This qualification has a large literacy component and for the whole group to do so well two years earlier than most candidates is particularly impressive.

Staff at Barry Comprehensive School are thrilled with the results and look forward to helping many of the boys continue their success in the Sixth Form.
