PCSO Mandy Michael of the Dyfan Neighbourhood Policing Team paid a visit to Barry Comprehensive School recently and gave a talk to pupils from Year 10 about law and order.

PCSO Michael was invited to talk to the pupils by Mrs Liz Zyjewski, head of the Learning Support Department at the school.

The lesson formed part of a wider range of topics covered by the Life Skills Classes. The Life Skills course includes a directed project which comprises a number of elements. These include developing an awareness of the community in which the pupils live, encouraging knowledge and understanding of actions which can improve their community, their roles and responsibilities in the community and how local government works.

“My talk began with some general points about law and order before moving on to more specific topics. I was able to give the pupils an outline of the roles and responsibilities of the Neighbourhood Policing Teams and the Response officers and the differences between Police community Support Officer and Police Constables.

“I then told them about certain Police powers such as Stop and Account and Stop and Search before describing the ASBO process to them.

At the end of my presentation there was an opportunity for the students to ask questions and there were a number of interesting and pertinent questions and points raised.”
