When we decided to do “Peter Pan” as this year’s school pantomime, we wanted to make sure we did something slightly different with the story (without removing too much of the original magic created by J.M.Barrie and Walt Disney), so the classic fairy tale was given the Barry Comprehensive School treatment last week when we performed to sold-out audiences over three nights.
The cast was full of talented and enthusiastic performers, from years 7 to 12 and two exceptional performances by teachers Miss Karen Walters as the hard to kill/silence Tinkerbell, Mr David Pereira as the bumbling yet loveable Smee and two of our foreign exchange students (Terresa as Mrs Darling and Dominic on piano). With the huge amount of talent available to the school this year, we decided to have a double cast for the main parts enabling more students to showcase their talents.
All of the classic characters were here, including Peter Pan played by Daniel Saunders (yr 9) and Louise Parker (yr 12), Captain Hook played by Jack Feuresein (yr 10) and Jordan Forse (yr 12) and Wendy played by Kelly Virgil (yr 12). Of course our version had to include some extra characters including Captain Jack Sparrow (Luke Elworthy Yr 10), two very butch Mermaids (Daniel Morgan and Ben Sully Yr 12) and a whole host of wacky and magical pirates and lost boys.
The performance was a huge success with many members of the audience waiting after the performance to congratulate the cast and thank them for a fantastic night, with many commenting it was the “best yet”!
Directors Audra Ellis and Ian Piekielniak were ecstatic with the response from the audience but would like to express their delight with the effort and work put in by the whole cast and crew of “Peter Pan”. The standards achieved in such a short period of time have improved once again from the previous year.
We would like to thank everyone who attended the performance for their support and we hope to see you all again next year for some more quality production work. Watch this space.
