At the end of last term a group of Barry Comprehensive Year 10 Physics students went to Cardiff University for a number of lectures. The principal lecture concerned String theory and was presented by an electric guitar-playing physicist called Dr. Loony. He immediately told us not to laugh at his name because it wasn’t made up. After listening to an excellent mini rock concert – he didn’t hold back on the decibels either - the talk was exceptionally good. We heard theories about different dimensions and also how the universe was created by the big bang. The following talk discussed Cardiff Universities ‘BLAST’ project taking place in the Arctic which involved sending a telescope to the edge of our atmosphere using a helium weather balloon. and then recovering all the observations. We learnt that things don’t always go as planned in Physics but they eventually managed to get great pictures of the universe. The final event was a competition between some of the post-graduates. They had to demonstrate and explain a Christmas experiment of their choice and we then got to pick a winner who reserved a whopping £100 During all the lectures we were able to take part in a number of demonstrations involving infrared, compressed air and lots of stress balls. All in all a very fun and interesting day!
