Forty-five pupils from Barry Comprehensive School submitted their photographs in the recent RIBI Photographic Competition. Based on the theme “Make Dreams Real” the photographs by winners in the Intermediate and Senior categories will now have their work sent on to the National Competition. The entries were judged by a panel of members of Barry Camera Club.

“The winning photographs were: Intermediate: Jakob Miller with a moody picture of a waterfall between banks of massed ferns and flowers. Senior: Curtis Fowler with a sharp print of a donkey’s head in the foreground gazing at a streamlined balloon emblazoned with the word ‘Dreams’.

The good entries were very, very good and showed a great deal of imagination and photographic expertise. Although there was no Highly Commended category in the competition, the judges thought the following entries worthy of comment:

Josef Watson’s picture of a statue of an introspective child came very near to the winner, as did Doniz Simon’s close up of a puppy. This latter print had a rreal ‘AAHH’ factor. Also of merit were Owain Kellaway’s reversed colour shot and Nik Novoselov’s monochrome trio, both pictures taken on camera phones.

Two others caused much comment: Calumn Newman’s multiple images of himself battling with a BMX bike and an eerie picture by Gerran Howell of numerous baby doll heads scattered over the page. Both of these were obviously the result of a great deal of dedication and hard advanced work on a computer.

One further unanimous comment from the judges relates to Ryan Abbott’s work. Although his print did not win, the attached script waswas of such high standard and so well written that he should be congratulated on that alone. ”

Finally, a warm thank you to all entrants, whatever your style or quality, without you there would have been no competition.”
