Pupils at Barry Comprehensive have had an active start to the year. The annual whole school elections took place at the end of September, welcoming a new group of pupils into the world of democracy and participation via the year and school councils. In the first school council meeting of the year, the council decide to focus on environmental issues such as litter and recycling and pledged to continue with all the fundraising undertaken last year for Help Lanka, The Jam Fund and Children in Need.

The Eco Committee travelled to Lewis School, Pengham (one of the other single sex boy’s schools in Wales) to take part in their Climate Change Conference. We were very privileged to see David Noble, a speaker trained by Al Gore who travels the world spreading the word about Climate Change. Pupils were inspired by the speeches given by the current climate change champion for Wales, James Fletcher. James is a year 13 student who also works for the Welsh Assembly Government. His work has taken him to Japan and the Netherlands.

Finally, last week, Barry Comprehensive hosted the Vale Youth’s service Local Democracy day where pupils from Ysgol Bro Morgannwg and Bryn Hafren joined students from BCS to talk about local issues and place some very challenging questions to Local Councillors and Police in Barry’s own “Question Time”.
