Barry Comprehensive School’s brand new cycle shelter is now in use.

Following the production of a School Travel Plan, involving pupils, the School Council, parents and governors, the School was successful in securing £119,000 as part of the Safer Routes to Schools Initiative from the Welsh Assembly Government.

A number of measures have been taken to ensure the safety of pupils in and around the school. Already in place is a new crossing in front of the school n Port Road, with flashing signs to remind motorists that they are approaching a school and that there is a 40 mph speed limit. We hope to have this limit reduced further. A new cycle path has also been put in place from the Colcot Road roundabout through to the end of the school drive.

Most exciting of all is the construction of a new cycle entrance and a lockable cycle shelter for more than a hundred bikes with lockers for helmets and wet weather gear. Questionnaires and surveys carried out as part of the bid indicated that whilst 76% of pupils owned bikes, only 4% rode them to school because there was nowhere they could be left safely. Hopefully, more pupils will decide on the healthy option of riding to school rather than rely on the bus or Mum and Dad to drive them. This will also help relieve the congestion around the school at the beginning and end of the day.

Over 100 pupils have already signed up to bring their bikes and there is regularly a queue waiting for the shelter to be unlocked, even on wet mornings!

Following the production of a School Travel Plan, which was submitted to the Welsh Assembly Government, we have been successful in securing £119,000 as part of the Safer Routes to School Initiative. Measures are to be taken to ensure the safety of pupils in and around the school.

Already in place is a new crossing in front of the school on Port Road, with flashing signs to remind motorists that they are approaching a school and that there is a 40mph speed limit. Despite many attempts we were unfortunately unable to get this limit reduced, but we will keep trying. A new cycle path has also been put in place from the Colcot Road Roundabout through to the end of the school drive.

Most exciting of all is the construction of a new cycle entrance, and a lockable cycle shelter for 100 bikes. There will also be lockers for helmets and wet weather gear. From questionnaires and surveys which were part of our bid, some 76% of pupils said they owned bikes, but only 4% rode them to school because there was nowhere they could be left safely.

Hopefully more pupils will now decide on the healthy option of riding to school rather than rely on the bus, or mum or dad to drive them to school. This will also help relieve the congestion around the school at the beginning and end of the day.

Parents wishing their son to ride their bike to school must sign the pro-forma below and return it to school. Only those pupils who return a form will be allowed to bring their bike to school after Easter.
