Year 6 visitors at take-off |
On Friday 10th October Barry Comprehensive School became host to almost 300 year six pupils. This year saw a difference, with boys only visiting. Less pupils meant there was more flexibility with planning, and this led to a ‘skills based’ day.
The Science department took over the school hall with a large scale experiment on transport that featured hovercraft and a hot air balloon. Pupils were asked to predict and question in true scientific fashion. Teachers in the Art department were equally innovative with an ‘Under the Sea’ Mosaic project – the results are spectacular!

In terms of physical skills, pupils were certainly put through their moves: Emma Mallon and fellow dancers, from The Vibe, took over the drama studio with some large scale street dancing. There were also a range of sporting activities, the highlights of which were the opportunity to play alongside Cardiff Blues Xavier Rush and Mathew Pritchard and Leon Green from the Celtic Crusaders.
Doug Corp, from Careers Wales, set the year 6 pupils an enterprise challenge: to build an aerodynamic plane out of recycled materials. These were actually flown on the school’s playing fields.

We were lucky enough to welcome Mr Jonathan Hill from ITV Wales into our very own news room |
Our near neighbours, the fire service, invited pupils to visit and provided a very exciting experience exploring the fire engines, using the high pressure hoses.
Mini Male Mayhem (MMM), Barry Comprehensive’s in-house reporting team, was keen to cover the story (and gave up their day off to do so). MMM were fortunate in gaining some top tips from HTV’s own Jonathan Hill, who was generous enough to give up a couple of hours of his time to work with the budding journalists. ‘Tight and bright’ are key factors in reporting – did our young journalists get it right? We think you should judge. Many of the photos and captions on this page are from the MMM team and you can read / download their report ny clicking on the image to the right. |
