Clay
Day

Last term pupils studying GCSE Ceramics at Barry Comprehensive School were invited to attend a ‘Clay Day’ at the University of Wales, Cardiff (UWIC). The event was arranged to promote Ceramic courses taught by UWIC as many universities across the UK have decided to stop teaching the subject. UWIC is now the largest Ceramic Course provider in Europe and has fantastic facilities and lecturers providing the best education in this field.

The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day, which involved a variety of events from throwing clay pots to Raku glaze firings. It gave pupils an opportunity to see the learning pathway between studying Ceramics at school and then at University. Lecturers showed how the subject can lead to many career options, which inspired pupils to think about their future.

The University staff were extremely pleased with the boys work, Matt Thompson, one of the Technical Demonstrators, said ‘your pupils have produced great ceramic work today… we are really impressed with how quickly they have learnt clay making skills’. The pupils were extremely proud of their efforts and have gained ideas for their GCSE Ceramic work. We look forward to being invited back to have more fun using clay.
