Barry Comprehensive School’s recent Healthy Living Week was another success, with students from all year groups getting involved in a range of activities to promote healthy eating, healthy bodies and healthy minds.
Healthy Living was the topic of the week in every subject: whether it was PSE, Geography, English, RS, Welsh, Art or French, students were immersed in all things healthy across the curriculum.

Fruit tuck shops were run each break and lunch time run by Year 12 Welsh Baccalaureate students (with help from Mrs Kennedy). Due to the enormous demand they had completely sold out by Thursday morning! Meanwhile students from 7SM were acting as Healthy Living Ambassadors in the canteen for the week, awarding those students who made healthy eating choices with stamps for their Healthy Living Logs.

Miss S. Morgan and Mr W. Jones – along with invaluable support from Year 10 Welsh Baccalaureate students – trained the whole of Year 7 in ‘Heartstart’ emergency life saving skills. The students had great fun learning the serious skills of performing CPR, although they still need to work on their singing - ‘Nellie the Elephant’ was the tune of choice used to help them time their chest compressions!

The school were very grateful for outside help too: A representative from The Teenage Cancer Trust came to give an engaging and potentially life-saving talk to Year 12 Citizenship students whilst Theatr Iolo performed “The Ugly Truth” to the whole of Year 9, a very powerful exploration of issues surrounding body image, self-esteem and bullying. Healthy bodies were encouraged too as some lucky Year 7 and 8 students had normal lessons replaced by badminton, futsal and dodgeball, thanks to Ben Williams, 5x60 officer for the school.

Of course, even with the week over the healthy living doesn’t stop there and hopefully students will continue their new, healthier habits. There was an added incentive too: the 60 students who made the most effort to make healthy choices over the week and keep their Healthy Living Logs over half term were rewarded with a swimming trip to Barry Leisure Centre.
