RM HQ
Visit

Barry Comprehensive School pupils were invited to visit the Research Machines (RM) REAL Centre at their headquarters in Oxford.

The REAL Centre (Rethinking Education And Learning) is packed with the latest high-tech equipment and is designed to provoke discussion and research about how the integrated design of furniture and technology can provide flexibility and extend the range of activities to support a more learner centred approach.

The day was very hands-on, with pupils having the chance to build robots, produce animation, use a green-screen, podcast, and use touch screen and 3D technology. They also tried eye-controlled communication equipment designed for individuals with special needs and used an interactive environment made of light.

Pupils also liked trying out all the different furniture, including giant waterproof beanbags, a chair that is impossible to tip up on and individual tables that can fit together in any number of shapes to enable students to work individually, in pairs or in groups of any size

Students gave really constructive feedback and the RM team were amazed by their knowledge and expertise. They also commented how enthusiastic and well behaved all the students were and how nice it was to see boys from year 7 through to year 11 working and getting along together so well.

The pupils, who are part of the school’s Student Action on Learning and Teaching group (SALT) felt that the day was really worthwhile and they will be writing up their report and recommendations in September.

We are grateful to everyone at RM for a fascinating and fun visit.
