UWIC
First Campus

Barry Comprehensive pupils joined their peers from seven other schools at the UWIC First Campus Residential course at the start of July

The pupils studied a range of degree options including Forensic Science, Dance, Music Composition and Astrophysics. As well as working with pupils their own age, they met and worked with Student Ambassadors who are current students of the university.

First day was spent in team building exercises to get to know students from other schools, whilst days two and three were spent in degree lessons. A Graduation Ceremony was held on 7th July in front of parents and teachers.

Another valuable aspect of the course was the chance to experience life as an undergraduate, including staying in halls of residence, and getting up early for lectures after dancing for hours at the disco and karaoke events. Some of the boys had the following to say:

'At First Campus residential our experience was amazing! We all learnt a variety of techniques to help us in different situations. We met loads of friends and got along very well with all the different schools, the staff and the student ambassadors.'
Ashley Bolt [Product Design]
Tom Stoneman [Astrophysics]

'It was a great experience. I've learnt about animation and how hours of work can result in just a short piece of film'
Jacob Berg [Animation]

All staff at the university commented on how enthusiastic and well behaved our boys were and many now feel that university is a real option for them after school
