Some students prepared to wind down as the long summer holidays approached, but students at Barry Comprehensive were busy preparing themselves for life outside school. Year 10 were kept busy with Health and Safety briefs, personality tests and a very successful Enterprise Day that saw students working under pressure to create and market a product in a very short space of time. All students improved key skills, especially communication, as part of the project involved making a formal presentation. Students then left for the experience of working in a wide range of jobs around the Barry and Cardiff area. Year 12 students began their Skill and Community fortnight with formal interviews given by external business representatives. Doug Corp, from Careers Wales, organised an industry team to conduct individual interviews, including formal feedback. Students were naturally nervous, but most felt they had gained from this invaluable experience. Students then went on to work through ‘An introduction to Coaching', Heartstart Training, Enterprise activities and an introduction to Sign Language. Students were also introduced to the UCAS University Application process and have had opportunities to draft their personal statement. Many thanks to the visitors staff who gave up time to run sessions for students. Ben Coates, a former pupil, gave up his time to deliver a professional presentation on life at Swansea University and then took part in a large group visit to Swansea University . Again, year 12 students completed the year with formal work experience. A big thank you to all those agencies, businesses and offices who are working with our year 10 and year 12 students.
