Tips for a greener Christmas
|
Barry Comprehensive School Eco Group has come up with the idea of sending eCards instead of printed cards. By sending printed cards we are using up paper, ink and resources involved in transportation. If we send eCards, we are not wasting resources such as trees and fuel. This can be our ‘little bit’ over Christmas this year.
Save one of the images on this page and you can eMail them to friends and family to wish them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. All the cards on this page are made by Barry Comprehensive Pupils
Other things that we can do this year include.
- Collect all the Christmas Cards that you get and bring them to school in January for recycling.
- Why not send one of our eCards instead of a paper one, this would reduce the waste paper and card.
- Make a family pledge to re-cycle as much as you can over Christmas. Give each member a role e.g. Mum could be in charge of retrieving and re-cycling the wrapping paper, Dad could be in charge of food packaging.
- Buy rechargeable batteries for any electronic toys and gadgets.
- When you do your Christmas shopping, use bags for life or take old carrier bags with you.
- Buy gifts which have been sourced or made locally without the environmental impact of transportation, instead of buying products which have been imported from across the world.
- Buy a potted Christmas tree so that it can be replanted or recycle your tree after the festive period is over.
- Choose LEDs instead of incandescent bulbs to decorate your tree, home or school. They’re more expensive, but last much longer and use 80% to 90% less power than conventional bulbs.
- Recycle wine bottles, pickle jars, newspapers, cans, plastic bottles, bags, wrappers and cardboard, where possible.
- Make a school New Year’s resolution to do more to care for the environment in 2010.
