Barry Comprehensive School’s Catch-Up programme is a scheme that is designed to improve students’ literacy and numeracy and to ensure that each individual reaches their full potential.

Catch-Up Literacy involves students attending a session twice per week where they focus on reading, spelling key words and writing. The students have been able to access a wide range of different texts and have improved their reading scores significantly when assessed at the end of the initiative.

Catch-Up Numeracy focuses on developing students’ key skills. The two sessions involve students working individually with a member of staff. This provides an opportunity to develop a greater understanding of numeracy using a range of different teaching methods and resources. When assessed at the end of the initiative students had made very pleasing progress in terms of numeracy.

The commitment and motivation of students and staff has contributed to the continued success of the Catch-Up programme.
