Barry Comprehensive pupils and staff were proud to welcome Leighton Andrews Welsh Assembly Government Minister for Education and Skills and Assembly Member for Rhondda and Jane Hutt Welsh Assembly Government Minister for Finance and Leader of the House and Assembly Member for the Vale of Glamorgan to the school on Thursday 3rd November. The Ministers were keen to look at the school’s pioneering implementation of student led systems which gives all students a say in the running of the school through their elected representatives to the Student Parliament.
Members of the Student Parliament gave an overview of the work of the School Parliament as well as explaining the election process and giving examples of the positive effects the system has on school life. The School Parliamentarians, along with Head of PSE Sian Morgan, then expertly answered questions from the Ministers regarding their experiences and their plans for developing the School Parliament in the future.
Mr Andrews and Ms Hutt then visited the school’s Hospitality & Catering Department where they sampled a selection of impressive cakes freshly baked and decorated by students. Both visitors took time to chat to the students and the Head of the Catering Department, Lorraine Lancaster, and complimented them on their professionalism. The school is grateful to Mr Andrews and Ms Hutt for their time and support and hope they had an enlightening and delicious visit. Click here to read about the visit on Leighton Andrew's website
