The students on site at European Vinyls Corporation Barry Comprehensive's innovative Science Department is the first in the Vale to launch a new GCSE course in Applied Science. The course is a vocational qualification that provides a broad scientific education as a foundation both for training leading to employment and for further and higher education. Twenty-two Year 10 students are approaching the end of the first year of the course and twice that number are expected to sign-up for the course in September. The course places an emphasis on the relevance of science in the workplace and on the importance of health and safety initiatives. To facilitate this, the school is liasing with local business and industry to allow students to visit working sites and observe at first hand how the theory studied in the classroom is applied in the real world. European Vinyls Corporation (UK) Limited, who produce PVC product for UK and worldwide distribution at their Sully plant, was the first local industry to open its doors to the students. Barry Makepeace (Health and Safety Officer) and Vanda Morrick (Technical Manager) were kind enough to tour the students around the plant giving them an insight into the workings of a local scientific industry. Students and staff are extremely grateful to everyone at the European Vinyls Corporation for their support.
