Football Focus

BCS FootballAs the football season enters its final months all year groups continue to pursue the cups and trophies that are on offer this year.

The Year 7 team coached by Mr Ingle made a fine start to the season in both the league and cup, remaining unbeaten in the league over five games and reaching the semi-finals of the Cardiff and Vale Schools Cup. The team has a good spirit and with Sam Adamson scoring important goals for the team, area success is possible this season. In addition to this, the team have also managed to reach the quarter finals of the Welsh Schools Cup and are hopeful of progressing through the final rounds.

The Year 8 team coached by Mr Childs are looking to build on their cup success in Year 7 and have made good progress this season. Although, they were knocked out at the quarter final stage of the cup the team remain unbeaten in the league and if Scott Grayson maintains his excellent run of form there is no reason why the team should not win the competition.

The success of the Year 9 team last year has ensured that the current crop have a lot to live up to this time around and the team are doing their level best so that the traditions are upheld. Although they were recently eliminated from the last 16 of the Welsh Schools Cup, they have made an excellent start in trying to retain the league title that they won last year, whilst they have also reached the quarter finals of the Robert Lewis Cup which will be played against Whitchurch. With Kayne McLaggon banging in the gaols and Peter Fordham marshalling the midfield, teams will find them hard to beat in the latter stages of the season.

After an outstanding season last year winning the league and cup double and reaching the Welsh Cup final, it was always going to be difficult for the Year 10 team to maintain such an excellent run of form. However, although Glyn Derw ended a twenty four match winning run the boys have managed to re-establish themselves as the team to beat in the Cardiff and Vale Schools league as well as progressing to the quarter finals of the Seagar Cup where they will play Llanedryn. Lewis Bailey and Edward Roe continue to be the rock at the heart of a strong defence and the team are hopeful that they will achieve more success this year.

The Year 11 team are obviously late developers finding their form as they reach the final year of school. Having little success since Year 7 the team seem to have a determination to go out this year with a bang. They remain undefeated in the league and have reached the semi-finals of the cup competition. In addition to this the team have reached the last 16 of the Welsh Schools Cup driven by the superb performances of centre half Michael Davis.

All in all the final months of the season should be exciting as the race for silverware hots up, the only question is can the boys convert the potential into trophies?

The Quest For Silverware

As the football season draws to a close, Barry Comprehensive School football teams continue in their quest for silverware throughout the age groups. In terms of league success the boys have done very well with the Year 8, Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 sides all winning their Cardiff West League and looking forward to league play-offs against the winners of the Cardiff East Leagues.

The boys have also made excellent progress in the Cardiff Schools Cup competitions with the Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 sides all reaching the final and Year 7 awaiting their semi-final.

The Year 9 side defeated Mary Immaculate 7-4 in a nail biting fixture in which Barry, aided by blustery conditions, raced to a 5-0 half time lead but in the second period Mary Immaculate fought back and only two well worked goals, one after a rehearsed corner and the second after terrier like work by Joe Mathews guaranteed the win.

Year 10 also had an uncomfortable passage through to the final eventually beating Llanedryn 7-6 on penalties after normal time had ended goalless.

Against Cantonian the Year 11 team raced to a comfortable 3-0 lead, with goals from Sam Johnson, Shelton Payne and Tom Hutton and it stayed this way until 10 minutes to go. However, the team appeared to try their best to lose the game by conceding 2 goals to set up a tight finish but they sneaked through to set-up a final against Fitzalan.

So, the teams continue to go from strength to strength and with a potential haul of eight trophies from a possible ten available in Cardiff school football, Barry Comprehensive could become the dominant force in school football. This would be a phenomenal feat, but as always in sport potential does not always equal trophies - can they keep their nerve with only a couple of games to go?
