Three trainee drama teachers from U.W.I.C. Drama Department have been in residence at Barry Comprehensive School for the last four months, working on a very special project with Keystage 3 pupils. Karen Walters, Head of Drama, set them the task of putting on a production (based on “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl) that would go on tour to local Primary Schools.

“The Drama Department have worked on a transition project, every year, with local junior schools and it has been a great success. It promotes confidence in the pupils in Year 6 before they come up to the Comprehensive”, said Miss Walters, “and the trainee teachers have enjoyed the whole experience of working towards a school tour with their young actors.”

All the cast of “Charlie”, have developed their acting skills and performed to a high standard. These young men are our future actors for forthcoming productions and for some, it is their first ever time on stage. The production was performed in the Drama Studio last week and will be visiting Colcot Primary School, Cadoxton and High Street Schools at the end of May. It is an exciting experience for them, because it has made them feel like professional actors going out on tour.

Finally we are happy to report that trainee teachers, Emma Sandham, Lauri Duncanson and David Phipps, have all successfully completed this project and passed this section of their course and initial teacher training. It has been a rewarding time for both pupils and teachers and we wish them success towards the rest of their course at U.W.I.C. Barry Comprehensive has given them the encouragement and support to become great Drama teachers of the future.
