Volunteers hard at work in Morrisons

Barry Comprehensive students continued to support the Jamie Adamson Memorial Fund last week.

As the school's adopted charity for the year, pupils and staff were busy bag packing at the Morrisons store on the Waterfront. Each evening, pupils from a different year group worked cheerfully to raise money for the fund, and as a result of the generosity of customers nearly £1800 was raised – a tremendous achievement. The school is grateful to everyone who contributed and to the staff at Morrisons for their continued support.

Further fund raising events are planned throughout the year with all the money going to leukaemia research and to help other children like Jamie.

Can Cook, Will Cook

Teachers serving lunchPupils at Barry Comprehensive School are used to being offered a selection of freshly prepared meals at lunchtime but today was different - their teachers had prepared, cooked and served the food!

The teachers swapped blackboards for chopping boards in order to raise money for the Jamie Adamson Memorial Fund. Local businesses generously donated the ingredients so that all the days takings could be passed onto the fund. Jamie's parents came to the school to observe the event firsthand. Mr Adamson said, “We are very grateful to the school for their support this year. The fund has now passed the £7000 mark thanks to the generosity of all our supporters. The money will be used to support local children and their families coping with cancer and also to support cancer research”.

BCTV, the Schools own TV company caught all the hard work on videoMs Jane Edwards, the teacher who organised the event, said, “All the stress, heat and shouting was worth it – after weeks of preparation the staff worked wonders, and the pupils tried some quite unusual food. Thanks to the donations of food from Welsh Bros Butchers, The Veg Rack, Waitrose and Bunzl Catering as well as DBC, we raised over £700 for the Jamie Adamson Memorial Fund”

Mrs Sharon Hutcheon, the Catering Manager, commented, “We had a very successful day. The teaching staff who volunteered for kitchen duty worked very hard as part of the team. The only question now is who will do the washing up!”

What did the pupils think of their teachers' culinary skills? Year 8 pupil Corey Froud was very enthusiastic, “The food was lush – I had beef chilli with couscous and potato salad and a fruit salad for afters!”
