Cadet of the Year Competition

Cadet Corporal Lewis Edwards displays his trophyBarry Comprehensive school pupil Lewis Edwards, better known to his colleagues at the Barry Rescue Division of the St. John Ambulance as Cadet Corporal Edwards, recently won the Vale of Glamorgan Cadet of the Year competition.

Lewis gave the following description of the competition. “The competition tests many skills that a Cadet should have; the main test is really a presentation to the panel of officers judging the competition. You are given a list of questions of which you pick one, you then prepare and present your argument or answer to that question to the panel. There is then a 5-minute interview, where the panel can query your presentation and ask other questions about you. There are also tests of leadership and teamwork, which are assessed during team building exercises. You also under go an extremely strict uniform inspection where the smallest things count, and only you can win the points.'

Not content with the County award, Lewis will be going to Brecon in July to compete for the title of Cadet of the Year for Wales. He has certainly got his work cut out for him.
