It's been a busy year, so far, for the Drama Department at Barry Comprehensive School. After the great success of ‘The Yellow Brick Road', pupils are busy rehearsing and planning for the next few productions to come, including a showcase of G.C.S.E. and ‘AS' practicals, ‘The Golden Ticket' and ‘Oh what a Lovely War' in the summer term. Working hard and developing their performance skills, ‘AS' Theatre Studies students have been working with professional actors in workshops, G.C.S.E. students have studied Theatre-in-Education with local T.I.E. company ‘Theatr Iolo' and soon ‘A2' Theatre Students will be working with Splendid Productions, studying Brecht and his techniques.

An important part of any Drama course is looking at plays and going to the theatre and recently, a group of years 10, 11 and 12 students participated in a London Theatre Experience, where they saw, a musical, a ghost story and Shakespeare, over a period of two days. The student's were brilliant and the different year groups worked alongside each other and bonded during the two day tour. After an exhilarating performance of ‘The Lion King', they all screamed themselves silly at ‘The woman in Black' and talked about both shows for endless hours, back at the hotel, where they wrote their reviews. The following morning was a very different kind of theatre where we were invited to experience how the Elizabethans behaved at ‘The Globe', while watching Shakespeare's plays. Despite freezing conditions, we toured the wonderful atmosphere of the open-air theatre and participated in the exhibition of Shakespeare's works reciting endless quotes ‘ To be or not to be', ‘All the Worlds a Stage . . . .'

All in all, a wonderful opportunity for our drama and theatre studies students to watch, perform and express their enjoyment of theatre in full. An experience they won't forget in a hurry.
