Barry Comprehensive School recently welcomed the opportunity to host a FAW Trust initiative called ‘Show Racism the Red Card’. The session was organised and hosted by ex West Ham United, Charlton Athletic, Fulham and QPR star Leroy Rosenior and was split into a classroom based session and a football training session. The Year 7 football squad are currently waiting to play their quarter final tie in the Cardiff Cup and were the lucky ones to be chosen to represent the school and given the chance to take part in this learning experience.
The initial part of the day saw the boys discuss their views and opinions regarding racism, both in a social and sports context, and they took the opportunity to quiz Leroy about his experiences of racism throughout his career. Mr. Ingle and the squad were very interested in hearing about the strategies used to show racism the ‘red card’. In particular Callum Parker and Elliott Jackson asked some very good questions that impressed Leroy immensely. In addition the squad watched a DVD in which Premiership stars Rio Ferdinand and Joe Cole were joined by other celebrities such as Gary Lineker, to promote the belief that racism has no place in football or society as a whole. After being part of such a fantastic discussion indoors, the boys were then treated to a training session by Leroy himself who put the boys through their paces before finishing with a 5-a-side tournament. The afternoon ended with prizes presented by Leroy to the whole squad for their contribution throughout the workshop.
